The best way to predict the future is to invent it. (Alan Kay)

The following 10 principles of Conscious Evolution both inspire and arose from the ongoing work of the University for the Future Initiative:

1. Caring for the whole

We have inherited a fragmented kind of system. No one has made a concerted effort to make this whole thing seamless. (Robert Moore)

2. Celebrating uniqueness

Never forget that you are one of a kind. Never forget that if there weren’t any need for you in all your uniqueness to be on this earth, you wouldn’t be here in the first place. And never forget, no matter how overwhelming life’s challenges and problems seem to be, that one person can make a difference in the world. In fact, it is always because of one person that all the changes that matter in the world come about. So be that one person. (Buckminster Fuller)

3. Cultivating conviviality

I consider conviviality to be individual freedom realized in personal interdependence and, as such, an intrinsic ethical value. (Ivan Illich)

4. Conspiring for human scale

Human needs, self-reliance and organic articulations are the pillars which support Human Scale Development. However, these pillars must be sustained on a solid foundation which is the creation of those conditions where people are the protagonists in their futureā€¦ There is no possibility for the active participation of people in gigantic systems. (Manfred Max-Neef)

5. Collaborating in open ways

Our world is in a difficult state right now, and what is called for is a way to create large scale change, in the environment, in the way we behave. The way to create these large scale changes is to tap into the power of open collaboration. The openness allows many people to contribute, and the collaborative part is about everyone figuring out how to synergize. (Alpha Lo)

6. Catalysing individual and social transformation

Transformative science is a science that deploys catalytic impact in societal change processes. (Uwe Scheidewind)

7. Co-creating abundance

People with a scarcity mentality tend to see everything in terms of win-lose… The more we develop an abundance mentality, the more we are genuinely happy for the successes, well-being, achievements, recognition, and good fortune of other people. (Stephen Covey)

If we just end up building the things I can imagine then we will have failed. (Tim Berners-Lee)

8. Completing vision-to-action cycles
Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is a nightmare. (Japanese proverb)
9. Contributing to the common good
Unless we work for the common good there won’t be any. (anonymous)
10. Changing the rules by implementing a new model

You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete. (Buckminster Fuller)
